St John Baptist Catholic Church

The Challenge
With the existing infrastructure nearing 40-years old, church leaders wanted to perform a lighting control upgrade that would:
- Increase light levels for the congregation, creating a warm and welcoming environment.
- Add focal lighting to accent the architecture and new art within the sanctuary.
- Provide a more energy efficient and sustainable solution, utilising digital dimming and LED fixtures.
- Work with existing conditions of the building.
-

Scalable
The Dynalite system was integrated into the university’s expansive campus. The modularity of the system allows the lighting control system to grow and evolve with the university’s ongoing expansion through a centralised control platform.
-

Innovative
The project integrates Dynalite with multiple third-party systems, including the Q-Sys control system for audio-visual management, the university’s Building Management System (BMS), and a fire alarm relay. This integration creates a unified ecosystem that not only streamlines building operations but also enhances safety and energy management.
-

Sustainable
The Dynalite system is a critical part of the university’s efforts to reduce energy consumption. The system’s energy-efficient features, such as automated scheduling, daylight harvesting, and occupancy sensors, ensure that lighting is used only when necessary, contributing to the university’s broader sustainability goals.
The Solution
Lighting the way
Pulse installed decorative uplighting to accent specific features within the church, including the sacred artwork on the back wall of the sanctuary and the Stations of the Cross along the perimeter. Functional downlights were also installed and programmed with a high lumen output to improve visibility during Mass so reading from missals and hymnals was easier for parishioners.
Three distinct lighting scenes were programmed for various activities:
- During Mass, the lights are turned to full brightness. This provides the best environment in terms of visibility on the altar and for reading.
- A scene was created for prayer/confession, where the lights are dimmed to 50%. This creates a calmer ambience suitable for prayer.
- Afterhours, a night-mode has been programmed where only the lights above the tabernacle are on and the lights are further dimmed to 25%. This conserves energy while providing appropriate lighting for the sacredness of the space.

“We had an exceptional experience working with the Dynalite system. In addition to being easy to commission and install, the patrons of the church were thrilled with new lighting and user-friendly controls.”

Conclusion
Parish staff and parishioners are delighted with the transformation of their sanctuary. The space is shining brighter than ever before, and special emphasis has been brought to the sacred art and crucifix.
