The Challenge

Tesco is a multinational grocery retailer with almost 3,000 stores throughout the UK. In an ongoing programme to elevate the in-store experience, streamline operations and uphold their commitment to sustainability, Tesco engaged Lowry Lighting Solutions to upgrade the lighting controls at over 100 store locations.

The aging and inconsistent controls infrastructure was holding Tesco back from achieving its energy optimisation and operational efficiency goals. The client sought a system to monitor and control, and provide reporting on energy use, lamp failures and emergency lighting testing, across all its locations within the UK.

As such, the chosen solution would need to seamlessly scale across multiple sites, giving facility management at Tesco a broader perspective on how their stores are performing in energy management.

Finally, Tesco required a sub-three-year payback period within which the cost of the new system would be offset by energy savings and reduced maintenance costs.

“Lowry Lighting helped us upgrade the lighting controls across a number of stores, replacing outdated and unreliable systems that were costly to maintain and offered limited control.

With Dynalite, we now have full integration, seamless control, and far greater energy efficiency. The entire process was smooth, and Lowry’s team provided expert support throughout.

These stores are just the first phase of a wider roll-out across our estate, and we’re confident the same level of reliability and performance will be delivered in every location.”

The Solution

A proud Signify partner, Lowry Lighting Solutions bring the latest in lighting and control innovations to its customers across the UK. Specialising in end-to-end solutions from system design and project support to commissioning and ongoing maintenance, the team has extensive experience across multiple application areas including retail stores and multi-site projects.

Lowry specified the Dynalite control system to meet Tescos requirements for the network of stores across the UK.

Operational excellence in every store

Dynalite’s modular control system provides many flexible options to achieve energy savings, allowing Lowry to tailor their system design to suit their client’s unique requirements.

Occupancy sensing and daily lighting schedules deliver the right light, at the right level, in the right place, throughout the store. Scenes in public areas are automated through System Manager, whilst scenes in private staff areas can be manually overridden using an Antumbra user interface if required.

System Manager also empowers Tescos facility management to monitor and control ongoing building performance, schedule maintenance proactively, and schedule testing on the emergency lighting system.

This helps to streamline operations and allows Tesco to tailor their energy management strategy as site requirements or local legislation changes.

An integrated multi-site solution

To future proof the estate, amplify energy savings and improve operational efficiency, Lowry enabled the future connection of the site’s BMS via BACnet, using the PDDEG-S Ethernet Gateway. Paired with monitoring and control via System Manager, this will provide Tesco’s facility management with broad oversight of the performance of not just the lighting, but other integrated systems.

The DDRC810DT-GL was selected by Lowry for integrated control over third-party systems, ensuring lighting and HVAC work together in harmony to support Tesco’s energy management targets.

With Dynalite’s robust integration and multi-site capabilities, Lowry was able to tie multiple stores together into a single system for central management and control. This, paired with energy monitoring, usage reporting, and emergency lighting testing, significantly reduces Tesco’s energy usage and operating costs, whilst supporting a well-lit and safe environment for staff and customers.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency, Tesco partnered with Lowry to deliver a nationwide programme of lighting control upgrades across our estate.

This initiative is focused on driving energy savings, enhancing functionality, and improving visibility through remote monitoring and integration with our wider estate management systems. The new controls provide future-proof flexibility and standardisation, enabling us to optimise performance and respond dynamically to our store environments.

We selected Lowry based on their proven reliability, technical expertise, and responsiveness to the unique demands of our programme. Their solutions have already demonstrated significant improvements compared to our legacy control systems, which, while functional, had become increasingly difficult to maintain and lacked the scalability we now require.”

conclusion

Lowry lighting surpassed Tescos expectations on all fronts, providing a robust and quality lighting control solution to monitor, manage and control a growing network of stores throughout the UK.

The initial programme achieved a 2.5-year payback period and 25% annual energy savings over the old control system. Additionally, with the centralised monitoring and control over multiple locations, Tesco’s facility management can now avoid unplanned maintenance callouts thanks to the predictive maintenance tools and dashboard alerts within System Manager.
